' FRACTION ACTION ' INITIATIVE
3rd and 4th Class
Chinese New Year
Celebrating Chinese New Year.
The children in 3rd and 4th Class learned about Chinese New Year which took place on February 1st . This year is the year of the Tiger. The children researched the traditions and the many ways in which this special time is celebrated over multiple days by East and South East Asian communities. We also were able to hear first hand about how homes are decorated and what events take place each day. The children dressed up in red, the colour which symbolises vitality, celebration, good fortune, good luck and prosperity ! Some of the children also baked homemade treats which they shared with their classmates.
We all enjoyed this special time.
Junior Infants had their vaccinations during the month of December so we decided to set up a vaccination centre during our child-led play to help normalise the experience for them and we had lots of PPE on hand to make it more realistic!!
They came back from the real thing full of stories about how it didn't hurt. They were delighted with themselves.
GYMNASTICS
The children really enjoyed taking part in gymnastics over the last number of weeks in the community centre. This is a very popular strand in the P.E. curriculum for all the children. The boys and girls explored movement on the floor and got to use a variety of equipment. There was lots of balancing, rolling, turning, twisting, stretching, climbing and transferring weight using a variety of body parts while exploring space. The climbing frame was the highlight of most classes. Well done to all the children!!
STEAM in Rang a 5 agus a 6
5th and 6th class are half way through their STEAM online projects learning all about the human body. Each week Maureen zooms us from "Science in a Box" to teach us all we need to know about the human body. So far we have learned all about the lungs and made our very own set of lungs. We've discovered amazing facts about the heart. (Did you know that if you lay all you blood vessels out in a straight line they would wrap around the Earth.....twice!!) . We also examined X-rays and created our own skeleton hands.
Its been a fantastic few weeks and we cant wait to see what else we learn about our amazing bodies!
The children of Shinrone NS celebrated Grandparents' Day as part of Catholic School week 2022, on 26th January. We celebrated the important role played by grandparents. The love of a grandparent is to be celebrated and cherished, especially in recent times that saw so many children separated from their grandparents because of the COVID - 19 pandemic. As this pandemic continues to affect our lives, our grandparents were not able to visit our school this year. We were fortunate that 5th class were able to zoom some of our grandparents in school, designed cards, poems, songs and made a video to showcase our love for those who care for us during the good and tough times in our lives.
For the second year running, Shinrone National School have made Christmas cards to the people who receive meals on wheels in the area. The cards are part of a hamper that is delivered before Christmas. We don't know exactly where our cards end up as the area covers Shinrone, Cloughjordan, Dunkerrin, Moneygall, Roscrea, Carrig, Birr, just to mention a few. They were very well received last year and we hope they bring some light to someone again this year
The children in 1st and 2nd class completed lots of lovely Christmas art. We made costumes for Santa, we also created a little drummer boy and created 3D Christmas trees. We really enjoyed our Christmas activities. We had lots of fun!!
World Kindness Day promotes the importance of being kind to each other, to yourself and to the world. It is celebrated around the world on 13th November. 5th class carried out a small act of kindness for the Junior and Senior Infants by making cards to show their appreciation for their contribution to school life.

Hallowe'en fun in 1st and 2nd class
There was lots of Hallowe'en fun in Shinrone NS this week. The children from Múinteoir Sheila's room made spooky marshmallow krispie cakes. It was a very sticky experience!!! In Art, we made pumpkins. On Friday the whole school dressed up. There were lots of scary sightings all over the school, along with fashion shows, discos and Hallowe'en activities. Happy Hallowe'en everyone!!!!
Shinrone NS helps with dog fouling stencilling
Shinrone sensory walkway working group have themed up with ODEN (Offaly Disability Equality Network) to create awareness of the dog fouling issue in the community. This problem is an issue for everyone but can have bigger implications for many people with disabilities.
The children of Scoil Náisiúnta Suí an Róin were delighted to help out Offaly Local Development Company with this initiative. The children assisted with painting the stencils on the footpath with the message “Any bag any bin”.
Thanks to everyone involved
We had a busy September 2021 in 5th class!
Music Generation:
We welcome Tríona back into the classroom! The children love this opportunity to experience inclusion,
creativity, diversity and empowerment through music.
STEAM:
The children are engaged daily in their learning creating STEAM challenges offering meaningful collaboration increasing critical thinking.
Spellings For Me:
This programme is essentially a tailor made spelling programme. The child's spelling will be solely based on words that they do not know how to spell, working at their own level.
Athletics:
We welcome back Emmet to our new school year. The children are learning agility, balance, hand/ eye co - ordination, a standing jump of a metre distance and to increase their stamina.
Art:
The children had great fun seeing their own colouring pages come to life.
David Walliams:
The highlight of September was meeting David through zoom. They got to listen to David reading an extract from Gangsta Granny, The Boy in the Dress and The World's Worst Children. He also shared advice on how to be an author and to never give up on your dream!
We welcomed our new Junior Infants to our school. They have settled in so well. We hope that enjoy their time in Shinrone NS.

3rd and 4th Class
During Maths Week the children in Múinteoir Ciara's 3rd and 4th class completed various mathematical challenges which certainly tested the children's ability to Problem Solve! We also linked Maths to other subjects such as Gaeilge and Art.
Have a look at the children's 'own names' art work which demonstrates Symmetry. I'm sure you agree that this work is very impressive .
Well done to all the children for the great attention, detail and time they put into their Art work.
