Sun. Feb. 26th

12 noon-1:30pm

Looking forward to seeing you there!

STEM in Junior Infants

We love STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) in Junior Infants! We have a STEM trolley in the classroom where the children can choose to work with materials to construct different items. They are so creative when using these materials. Our LEGO station is one of the most popular stations in the classroom. We have also looked at concepts like floating and sinking and looking at how acids and alkalis react to each other.

Student Council 2022/23

Our student council comprises of children from 3rd - 6th classes. They were voted in by their peers and are very enthusiastic to make a difference in our school. They are the voice of the children and are eager to be heard. Watch this space to follow their story!

Child-Led Play

Children learn through play. Our 'planning meeting' for play is the children's favourite time of the day. The children choose 'who' or 'what' they would like to play with. They then have a planning meeting to decide what they will make or, if it the role play area, they will decide who they will be and what the drama will be. Children learn so much during this time. Then we all work as a team to tidy up. We talk about their play and what they enjoy and what they learned. They use lots of problem solving skills during this time. The children are always so engaged during this section of the day.

A Trip to the Arctic and Antarctic

Junior Infants studied the Arctic and the Antarctic. We studied the globe to see how far away the North and South Poles are away from Ireland. We looked at the animals who live in both regions, especially the polar bear and penguins. We chatted about the famous explorer Ernest Shackleton who explored the Antarctic.

We had great fun using our iPads and our interactive globe to find out information about the North and the South Poles, by using AR technology (Augmented Reality)

2nd & 3rd Class Literacy

The children in 2nd and 3rd Class have just completed their five weeks of Literacy intervention. During this time  each group of children read a number of novels such as 'The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark' by Jill Tomlinson , 'Wolfgran' by Finbar O' Connor and Roald Dahl's 'The Twits'.

The 'Building Bridges of Understanding' approach to the teaching of comprehension was followed whereby each child was given the opportunity to practise their skills with prediction, making connections, questioning and visualising . The smaller groups also allowed for each individual child to get a greater level of support as required

We have all enjoyed reading these various novels and the children have benefitted greatly from the smaller group teaching and learning.

Well done to all.

Junior Infants officially open our new Playground Area

We are thrilled to have finished our latest project in our school yard. We have slides, tyre swings, climbing bars, rock walls, ropes and nest swings. It is accessible for all the pupils in our school. The children are so excited about this new space. Onto our next project now!!

Lá Fhéile Bride-4th & 5th class

Imbolc or St. Brigid's Day marks the beginning of Spring, held on 1st February. Our ancestors believed that St Brigid crossed the land on the eve of her feast day and gave blessings and protection to homes and farms where crosses were hung. We had great fun making our own crosses to welcome St. Brigid.

St. Brigid's Cloak- A collaborative piece by the children to design St. Brigid's Cloak

VeX Robotics

Rang a Sé took part in the VeX Robotics coding competition in Birr Community School. It was a fantastic opportunity for the children to design , build and programme their own robot to take part in this years event. Each child go the opportunity to battle with other schools and although they didn't qualify for the Leinster section of the competition they had a fantastic day!

Chinese New Year-4th & 5th class

Chinese New Year was celebrated on January 22nd 2023. We learnt how to eat noodles using chopsticks, made Chinese lanterns for good luck and to decorate our classroom. The children wore red and yellow to also represent good luck.

RP Mentors 2023

Restorative Practice Mentor Belonging Programme

‘Be here!  Be you!  Belong!’

Before Christmas, sixth class pupils were invited to apply to be RP mentors (Friendship Keepers).

Our RP Mentors support connection and belonging throughout the school community – building this in good times and reconnecting to it in times of challenge!

Our RP Mentors model our restorative values and will acquire new skills around facilitation and leadership in working with junior classes.  They have two key roles:

1)      Bringing the good vibes!

2)      Supporting younger children/peers when there is a challenge.

We are very grateful to our RP Mentors for embarking on this journey to help make our school a safe and happy place for all!

Our Christmas Concert Returns!

We were very excited to be back on stage this year in front of an audience. 'The Greatest Snowman'  was performed by Junior Infants, 'Ralph the Reindeer' by Senior Infants and First Class and 2nd Class to 6th Class performed Disney's 'Madagascar'. The children rehearsed very hard for weeks and put on an amazing  show!

Science Week

Science week is a week long event in November, celebrating Science in our everyday lives. It offers the children to experiment and to engage with STEAM activities.

Here are some of the activities that were carried out in 4th and 5th class. We learnt about static electricity and how it is used to separate salt from pepper.

"The Bewitched Egg"- with the addition of salt in water, the egg will float.

Create "Cloud dough" - learnt about materials and change in this experiment.

Maths Week -Infants

All children in the school participated in Maths Week, exploring Maths all around us, using our Maths Eyes and taking on real Maths problems. Here are some photos of Junior Infants having fun estimating, making patterns and playing Maths Games.

International Day

We held a super International Day before Halloween. A big thank you to all our international pupils who brought us on a speedy "Round the World" trip, sharing their culture with us, reading to us in their native language and teaching us a few phrases.

Cycle Right Programme in 6th Class

6th class took part in a four week programme with Birr Adventure Centre where they learned how to look after their bikes and road safety while cycling on the raods.

Autumn Fun at Playtime!

The children love this time of the year when the leaves are changing colour and they fall to the ground. They have endless fun and love creating their leaf piles-which have to be guarded of course! Being buried in leaves is also a popular option too! Is aoibhinn linn an Fómhar.

GAA

Our 6th class won the Shield Final in Birr Community School mixed blitz competition. This blitz was organised for all incoming 1st years of 2023.

PE: Games - Ball Skills

During the months of September and October, we are focusing on the Games strand. We are very fortunate to have two excellent coaches coming into the school every week. We have Sylvia, an FAI coach, who does Soccer with the junior end of the school on Tuesdays. She will work with the senior end of the school for the rest of October and November. On Wednesdays our GPO, Ryan, is currently working on ball skills through gaelic football. This will change to hurling in a few weeks. The children thoroughly enjoy both sessions.

The Salmon of Knowledge

In Literacy, History and Art, the children in 2nd and 3rd Class have been enjoying the study of the well known Irish myth 'The Salmon of Knowledge'. They summarised the story in their own words and then were very creative in designing the magical fish.

4th & 5th class write to their pen pals in Tanzania

The children enjoyed learning about Tanzania and Africa.  They wrote letters to their pen pals and await eagerly for their response!

Shinrone NS Mud Café and 'Under the Tree' Restaurant are open for business!

The children got a great surprise today when they saw the latest additions to our playground area. Our 'Mud Café' and 'Mud Kitchen' were delivered over the weekend. Young and old were cooking up a storm today.

The Séan Robbins cup comes to Shinrone NS!

Great excitement as the Offaly County Champions visited our school to share their historic victory with us. We are very proud of them all and were delighted to be part of their celebrations. Suí an Róin Abú!
